3DEXPERIENCE PLATFORM

CLOUD SOLUTIONS FOR SOLIDWORKS

Learn about the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform

The 3DEXPERIENCE Platform is the environment through which Dassault Systèmes delivers its portfolio of industry leading technologies.

The portfolio provides solutions that span across 11 different industry sectors and brings together world renowned brands such as CATIA, SOLIDWORKS and SIMULIA. The range and scope of functionality within the entire platform is extensive and covers many aspects of the design lifecycle.

In this section we are focusing on the functionality that we feel will be most worthwhile for SOLIDWORKS users, such as the cloud data management, simulation, collaboration tools and project planning capabilities.

What are the main benefits of an online solution?
Does purchasing 3DEXPERIENCE give me access to all the functionality?

The different apps within the 3DEXPERIENCE platform and accessed by purchasing different roles. For example, if you wanted to use the Project Planner app you would need to purchase the Project Planner roles. View the roles section below to find out more about the roles we recommend for SOLIDWORKS users.

How do I get started with the 3DEXPERIENCE platform?

To use the 3DEXPERIENCE platform you will first need to purchase a tenant along with the roles that provide the functionality you need. We suggest that you contact a member of our team who to discuss what your requirements are. From there you can arrange a quote, trial or free demonstration.

How can the cloud platform help SOLIDWORKS Users?

In this webcast we start from the beginning and explain what the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform is, and what we believe the main benefits are for SOLIDWORKS users. We'll cover the advantages of a cloud based system, the importance of proper data management and expand on the other capabilities of the platform.

Roles and Apps
Customer can access the 3DEXPERIENCE platform buy buying new roles for designers. A role represents a user and the apps or functionality available to that user is determined by the type of role they have been given. For example the 'COLLABORATIVE DESIGNER FOR SOLIDWORKS' role provides access to the SOLIDWORKS 3D Connector which integrates SOLIDWORKS with the platform, whilst also allowing access to some additonal Enovia functionality. We believe the following areas will be most beneficial to SOLIDWORKS users.
Cloud Data Management
CAD Intelligent online file storage with access rights, revision management and customisable approval processes.
Project Planning
Plan projects by setting out required tasks and then assigning members, dependencies and deadlines. Keep projects on track using task notifications, Gantt charts and tools to monitor progress.
Collaboration Tools
Avoid disjointed email conversations by providing a centralized location for your team to share news, create surveys, review best practices and report updates.
Simulation
Advanced cloud based simulation capabilities that allow you to virtually test more complicated designs in a wider range of situations than with our desktop simulation products. Contact us today to discuss your virtual testing requirements.
Connecting SOLIDWORKS to the Cloud to manage your CAD files.
It is very important to understand that there is no cloud based version of SOLIDWORKS. In Cloud Connected versions of SOLIDWORKS, the CAD files are managed in the 3DEXPERIENCE environment. There are two ways to connect your SOLIDWORKS desktop application to the 3DEXPERIENCE.
SOLIDWORKS Connector

This method uses a SOLIDWORKS add-in. The add-in can be used to access the functionality of the Collaborative Industry Innovator directly within SOLIDWORKS.

The SOLIDWORKS Connector comes as part of the Collaborative Designer for SOLIDWORKS role. This role also adds some functionality from the Enovia suite of tools to support basic file data management, ideal for those companies who are looking to start simple file data management and want to use the Cloud to store their files.

Think of the 3D Connector as a bridge between the current, fully enabled, desktop version of SOLIDWORKS with the extended functionality of some of the 3DEXPERIENCE apps.

The connector works within SOLIDWORKS to provide an interface with your 3DEXPERIENCE workspace without needing to leave the SOLIDWORKS environment.

3DEXPERIENCE SOLIDWORKS

This version of SOLIDWORKS still requires a desktop installation of the software but is directly connected to the Cloud and its principle file saving and sharing is through the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform.

Created as part of 3DEXPERIENCE WORKS, this version of SOLIDWORKS comes in three editions similar to the usual desktop versions of SOLIDWORKS, namely Standard, Professional and Premium editions. Described by Dassault Systemes as 'Offers', the Connected 3DEXPERIENCE SOLIDWORKS editions are all desktop installations but with other functionality from the 3DEXPERIENCE portfolio included. These additions include 3D Creator used to easily and quickly create, review, and evaluate 3D conceptual and detailed models. The Professional and Premium versions also give access to 3D Sculptor to create organic shapes and complex surfaces easily with a cloud-based subdivision (Sub-D) modeling solution.

There are key differences in the design workflow when using these versions of SOLIDWORKS that you should consider when deciding the best method to connect your SOLIDWORKS to the cloud. Use the link below to discuss your options with one of our product experts.
